Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before getting in touch — and honest answers when the science is not straightforward.

What is tissue culture / micropropagation?
Tissue culture (also called micropropagation or in vitro propagation) grows new plants from a tiny piece of a mother plant inside a sterile lab vessel on a nutrient medium. Because it starts clean and copies the mother plant's genetics exactly, you get large numbers of healthy, identical young plants.
Which plants can you propagate?
A wide range — blueberries, seed potatoes, bananas, strawberries, sugarcane, proteas, carnivorous plants, ornamentals, rootstocks and indigenous species are among the most common. Some species are harder than others. See our plant guide for detail, or ask us about your specific mother plant.
Will the plants be identical to my mother plant?
Yes. Tissue culture produces true-to-type clones that share the mother plant's genetics. Somaclonal variation (random mutation) is a known risk in some protocols, which is why protocol selection and good laboratory practice matter.
Is this only for large commercial farms?
No. We work with backyard specialists and hobby growers as well as large commercial operations. The same clean process scales up or down.
How many plants can you produce, and how quickly?
From small specialist batches to large commercial volumes. Timeline depends on the species, the establishment phase, and the number of multiplication cycles required. We give you a realistic estimate at the consultation stage.
Do you store or back up genetics?
Yes. We can maintain elite or hard-to-replace mother stock in the lab as a living backup. Contact us to discuss long-term storage options.
Why is your service better than sourcing cuttings?
Conventional cuttings carry whatever the mother plant carries — including latent viruses and bacteria that may not show symptoms until after planting. TC starts sterile, removes systemic pathogens, and produces uniform stock at a rate cuttings cannot match.
